if you ask me what is it about haruki murakami that i am so obsessed about, i can’t answer you. i can’t pinpoint it. its a web of intangibles.

i like how he makes me feel. i like the loneliness of his characters. i like his simple metaphors. mostly, i like to be inside his world.

there’s an article in The Hindu called Confessions of a Murakami Junkie where the author manages to put to words about the appeal of murakami.

i’ve only two more books left - norwegian wood and the wind up bird chronicles. am leaving the latter for last - as it is a hefty book (609 pages), and i want it to last and last and last, i want to read it slowly and devour every word, squeeze every feeling out of the stories.

based on the six fiction books of his that i’ve read, his characters have the following similarities:

  • they love music
  • drinks whisky
  • has a cat
  • likes to cook
  • are not too perturbed when something bizarre happens to them (as if expecting his world of realities to crack)
  • is casual about sex
  • are loners
  • are passive people, allow events to happen and goes with the flow

of course, at work i scoured the net to read more about this japanese author that caught my fancy so suddenly. here are some that i’ve kept:
