travel guide : india and nepal
was reading on the way to work today. i know i've said this before....but i really can't stop saying how much i love reading travel guides! read this particular paragraph about accomodation in new delhi.....it sounds so romantic. actually, just reading travelguides feels romantic.
paharganj is hilarious and absurd - it's easy to imagine the first bewildered hippies back in the 60s, stumbling off the train at new delhi station and walking up the street to the convenient string of low end hotels. thirty years later, paharganj has adapted to the traveler's needs, but still retains its charming and characteristic squalor and seediness. it's a tranquil enclave, but there are dozens of std/isd booths, kashmiri "travel agents" with the gift of gab, hash dealers, money changers, and even occasional elephants walking down the main bazaar. it's dirty, it's decadent, and it's unadulterated delhi.
