interesting business
on the way back from work yesterday, dad was talking about this "interesting" business he saw in klang. all you need is - empty shophouse lots.
a little modification is performed. there are "experts" that guarantee results. they are so confident, that you don't need to pay them until a single bird is sighted flying into your shophouse.
swiflets. they fly in, build their nest and fly out. you leave the house empty one year, five years. these experts come in and clean the place up for you, collect the "bird's nest" and pass you payments.
yearly income estimation is in six figures. you have a couple of these empty houses and we're talking millions.
i told my dad, "it can't be that easy, there must be a catch"
he says, firstly - these experts are not cheap, their fee is probably twenty odd thousand (this is the modification they do to the house, once they see a single bird nest they collect payment from you, apparently it's got to do with some music they play that attracts these birds). secondly - it's messy, bird's droppings everywhere, dad mentioned the word "cancer", probably due to high concentration of ammonia onsite. thirdly - you have to worry about the possibility of government regulation.
this has been very successful in sitiawan, and booming up in klang. another problem you might face is thieves sneaking in to swipe your precious nests.
dad's solution - rent the ground floor to a 24 hour mamak restaurant. you get steady income in form of rent, as well as someone to babysit the nests upstairs.
