how India got her name

the word 'india' derives from Sindhu, the sanksrit name of the great river - known in english as the Indus - that flows into the Arabian Sea from its source in the snowy peaks of the Himalayas.

the ancient persians, unable to pronounce the initial 'S', used the word Hindhu to denote both the land and the people beyond the river's eastern bank. the term then passed to the greeks and into europe generally, resulting in the word Indu, which in turn became 'India' in English.
-extracted from The Rough Guide Chronicle : India

imagine that, india is named such because the persians cannot pronounce S! haha!

The name "Bharat" is derived from either of two ancient Hindu kings named Bharata, though it is more commonly accepted that the name derives from that of the son of Dushyanta, whom the Mahabharata credits with bringing the whole of Bharatvarsha under his rule and securing the title of an emperor. "Bha" in Sanskrit means knowledge or light, and "rat" is a verb for 'doing'. Bharat is therefore 'the one who is in search of knowledge.' Both names are commonly in use.

actualy there's a story to this.
In ramayana , the kingdom of ayodhya was supposed to belong to Rama , the first son of dasaratha. This monkey king had 3 wives , rama being born to the eldest of the three and bharath being born to the youngest. The youngest wife was of the jealous type, she envied all the attention that rama got. So she got rama exiled to the jungle and had bharath instated as the king of ayodhya. when rama had returned from the exile, bharath offered back his kingdom to rama. Rama refused n told bharath to rule the kingdom. As a token of appreciation , bharath said that he would rule ayodhya with rama's sandals overlooking his throne.

so the kingdom of ayodhya that was ruled by bharath is wot is famously known now as india. the land of bharath , bharatha.

its accepted in sanskrit and tamil, yes by the negritos and the aryans *grin*
