river of 1000 lingas
take a crazy king (jayavarman II) who fancies a river site. he likes it and likes it a whole lot. he tells his minions (jayavarman II declared himself god) to temporarily divert the river so that a thousand lingas can be carved upon the riverbed. and his word was law. the reason for this command - it is believed water that runs over lingas are fertile, and this river irrigates angkor's rice fields.

slightly below this field of 1000 carved linga riverbed are waterfalls that lands in a nice little pool. the crazy king takes fancy of this spot too. what does he do? again, he ordered his minions to divert the river temporarily while images of hindu deities were carved upon the river rocks, with patience, devotion and love. this area was to be the king's bathing area.

this site is called kbal spean, some 40 odd minutes drive from angkor wat. water from this river is still considered holy and sacred. saddeningly, vandalism happens.
