good news, bad news

good news first - borobudur (largest buddhist monument on earth located in central java) is unaffected by the quake.

bad news - prambanan (largest hindu temple in indonesia) is :(

Prambanan.jpg
Prambanan before the quake

this UNESCO Heritage Site, a beautiful landscape made out of more than 250 candis and shrines was damaged during the recent quake. prambanan has three main candis called Trisakti, each dedicated to the trimurti - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. the Brahma Temple was named among the affected temples.

such a pity as temples dedicated to Lord Brahma is scarce to be found. this can be explained through a legend - Brahma the Creator, once made a beautiful female called Shatarupa. so captivated was he by her form that wherever Shatarupa went, Brahma developed a head to keep constant gaze at her. it was this way that Brahma gained five heads - four at each cardinal direction and the fifth on top. Shiva the Destroyer, infuriated that Brahma has incestuous feelings (because Brahma created her, he was seen as her father), slain the head on top and cursed that no one will ever worship the unholy Creator. thus, from that day onwards, no one venerated Brahma.

speaking of legends - the creation of prambanan is an interesting one. King Boko's daughter, in an attempt to evade marriage with Prince Bandung, told him that she will wed him only if he is able to build a thousand temples in a single night. he fervently created 999 temples with the help of spirits. the javanese princess was dismayed that he might succeed, so she lit a fire in the east. thinking it was dawn, the roosters crowed. the prince was furious with her deception. in a moment of anger he changed her into a stone. today, the statue of this cunning princess is one of the most beautiful statues to be found in prambanan.

the temple is closed to public as the conservation agency is accessing the damaged afflicted by the wrath of the earth. it doesn't look too badly damaged, let's hope that with careful preservation and restoration, the temple will be doctored back to its former glory.

there's another story as to why worshipping of brahma is not allowed in hinduism. As far as i recalled the incest was of prajhapati n his 'daughter'. The ejaculated semen fell into a pit of fire n from which, the fiery 'rudra' rose. the first eva mention of rudra in the vedas i think .

Then again prajhapati was later on refered to as brahma. In the beginning therewas only prajapati, no vishnu no shiva. as u can c am not addressing the actual issue, just info.

Rite , so the other story is ya, that at some point of time (at this time shiva hasnt appeared anywhere in vedas but the presence of rudra was known), brahma n vishnu got into a dispute. Both were arguing that one is more powerful than the other. In the midst of the argument , a cylindrical form of fire appeared. It stretched far up to the sky and deep down to the craters . They both challenged each other that the person who finds the source (source in this case either being the beginning or end of the fire) would be the greatest amongst the two.

Both agreed, vishnu took the form of a boar to dig down (i think this is the third avatar of vishnu, varaham in the dasa avatar (10 avatars)) and starts digging. Brahma took the form of a swan n flew up. Both tried real hard but neither cud find the beginning nor the end.

Having failed to find the source, they then met at the surface. Vishnu admitted that he cudnt find the beginning. Brahma howeva lied n said he could find the ending. Vishnu then bowed n admitted defeat. He accepted brahma's supremacy n acknowledged him as the most powerful one. When this took place, shiva then appeared (its funny coz it shudnt b shiva but thats how the image is potrayed in the books and one of the early points where shiva was linked to rudra being the same person, but chronologically shiva hasnt appeared, weird weird...) and kicked brahma n called him a liar.

Both brahma n vishnu having first witnessed this far superior god bowed. Brahma asked for forgiveness but shiva was unyielding. He then took his trisulam (trident) and cut off the fourth head of brahma (dunno where u got the 5th head) and cursed him that he shall not be worshipped anywhere on earth. He then turned his attention to vishnu and told him how pleased he was with vishnu's honesty. He then told vishnu that he would be worshipped with equal glory on earth by mankind and blessed him (perharps why although amongst the trimurthi its often cased that shiva is the most powerful one and holding the 3 out of 5 jobs of god, vishnu is often depicted as being equal to shiva).

anyway that was the story i read.

am saddened with wot i c, its a very very old temple and one of the few places where brahma is worshipped although there's this one temple in india (new delhi i think).

the damage doesnt look bad, but i wonder how badly damaged the interiors are. Almost all the temples in indonesia are built out of volcanic stones. These stones are porous/soft and for obvious reasons are largely used for carving.

thank you for the storyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :)

the pillar of fire, i read the same story somewhere but instead of fire it was shiva's lingam

but that's hinduism for you no, variations and variations.

the volcanic stones are cold lava la, wot u expect la. since they appear on the layer, they r not really subjected to pressure n are less hard.

The entire deccan valley (in india right smack in the middle) is of volcanic stones, which is why temples in india have glorious carvings too. Take the shore temple pallava temple or even the khailash temple (temple that was carved top bottom)
